Wondering if an iPad 5th Gen smart cover case fits the iPad 7th Gen? The answer is yes—both share the same 9.7-inch chassis. Here's what to check.
Quick Answer
Yes, an iPad 5th Gen smart cover case fits the iPad 7th Gen because both models share the same 9.7-inch chassis and dimensions. You can use a 9.7-inch case designed for the 5th or 6th Gen on the 7th Gen without issues.
Why the 5th Gen Case Fits the 7th Gen
The iPad 5th Gen (2017), 6th Gen (2018), and 7th Gen (2019) all have the same 9.7-inch display and identical physical dimensions. Apple kept the same body design across these generations, so cases and smart covers are interchangeable.
The camera placement, button positions, and speaker grilles are also aligned, which means a case designed for the 5th Gen will line up perfectly on the 7th Gen. You won't have to worry about blocked ports or misaligned cutouts.
What to Check Before You Buy
Even though the fit is compatible, it's worth verifying a few details before purchasing a used or third-party case. Check that the case explicitly lists compatibility with the 7th Gen, as some manufacturers may have updated their molds slightly.
Inspect the camera cutout: the 7th Gen has the same rear camera position as the 5th and 6th Gen, but a poorly made case could still have a tight or loose fit. If you're buying online, look for product images that show the camera and button alignment.
Fit FAQ
- Does a 5th Gen case fit the 7th Gen?
- Yes. The iPad 5th, 6th, and 7th Gen all have identical 9.7-inch dimensions, so cases are interchangeable.
- Are the camera and button cutouts aligned?
